The IDC Global CIO Agenda 2019 predictions show that 30% of job openings for in-demand skills (such as Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and AI) will remain vacant through to 2022. Gartner also predicts that only 20% of existing employees have the skills and expertise required to drive successful digital transformation.

 

In Australia, the problem is exacerbated. We are a relatively small nation competing for the limited talent we have in a global marketplace. Each month, as I peruse tech job openings, I see an ever-increasing demand with the supply side not keeping up.

 

I also see media write-ups mentioning ‘the cloud is coming’. The Cloud is here. Well and truly here. And most organisations are not prepared to manage a cloud-native world.

 

 

How are you hiring, developing, and retaining talent to win in the cloud economy?

 

There is no doubt that having cloud-educated staff will assist your migration into the digital economy of the future. Therefore, efforts must be made towards employee preparation.

 

There are two ways you can approach the cloud skills gap within your organisation. You can take the hiring path, or you can take the training path.

 

I believe that focus should be placed on training the employees already at hand, and external hiring as a secondary. In order to achieve this, a proper cloud skills development strategy must be devised and implemented. This will involve mapping out current skills within the organisation, and future innovation trajectories.
